Book Review
Overall rating: 4/5 stars
Daughter of No Worlds explores slavery and the process of overturning institutionalized slavery. Tisaanah is an angry, fierce protagonist who shrewdly uses the world’s political intrigue to her advantage. She strongly depicts what it is like to be unfamiliar with a foreign language; her stumbling foibles through the Aran language were entertaining and illuminating about the difficulties of learning a new language.
With short chapters, the book reads very quickly. It takes a sharp pivot at the mid-way point, adding the POV of Max, Tisaanah’s mentor and love interest. This takes some getting used to, but is not an unwelcome change.
In Broadbent’s style, the book is grimly dark but not without levity and humour. She is not afraid to tackle dark subject matter like slavery, rape, and PTSD. However, themes of hope, belonging, and redemption run strongly throughout.
